Unlocking the potential of women in food and fibre
There are many talented, skilled, and experienced women in the food and fibre sector. These individuals could make a significant contribution to the sector, but the pathways just aren’t there.
In this mixed-methods research project, we combined Stats NZ’s powerful Integrated Data Infrastructure with surveys built through our in-house platform, Confer and targeted interviews. This multifaceted view revealed a story greater than the sum of its parts: there is a sizeable pool of rural women with valuable transferable and technical skills, but many are not in full-time work. The opportunity is less about building capability from scratch, and more about making pathways visible, suitable, and accessible so women can better connect their skills, confidence, and experience to meaningful roles in the sector.
